Blog Post #52-"Down River"

  • If you were Tally, would you ask the Warden to make you pretty.

Yes because that's the whole reason she went down to NPT. She really wants to become pretty and then get cured.

Blog Post #51-"Confessions"

  • Tally has finally come clean. Do you think she will regret it? Do you think David will change his mind about her?

Nope. I pretty dang sure a massive weight has been lifted off her shoulders. She has been practicing to tell him that for like a 2 months. Yeah I hope he doesn't but i'm pretty sure he will change his mind.

Blog Post #50-"Hippocratic Oath"

  • Should Maddy have forced Shay to take the "cure?" Why or why not?

If it was my best friend I would shove them down thier throat (nicely). Because I would love to have my old friend back.

Blog Post #49-"Night Alone"

  • If you were Shay, would you get the cure? Why or why not?

DEFINITELY! Why not, you would be beautiful and still have no brain lesions. What the heck might as well try there is only a 1% chance you will become a vegetable.

Blog Post #48-"Get Away"

  • Respond to the following quote from the chapter... what does it mean to you?"Tally thought of the lesions on Shay's brain, the tiny cancers or wounds or whatever they are that she didn't even know she had. They were in there somewhere changing her friend's thoughts, warping her feelings, gnawing at the roots of who she was."

I think this means Tally really wants the old ugly, Shay back. They were best friends and always pulled pranks together.

Blog Post #47-"Rescue"

  • Give a chronological list of important events in the chapter. What's the kicker at the end of the chapter?

1. Tally finds out that Shay is a pretty.

2. David and Tally find David's mom and frees the other Smokies.

3. Tally and the others ride up the elevator to the roof.

4.KICKER-David finds out his dad is DEAD!

Blog Post #46-"Inside"

  • Is this quote a play on words, or does it have a deeper meaning to the story? "Radiology. Neurology. Magnetic Imaging," she read softly. "Operating Theater Two."

I think those have a different meaning. I bet those are torture chambers where the "mess up" people. Let me just say they aren't a place you would want to go.

  • What "labels'' do Tally and David find in Special Circumstances building? Give a BRIEF description of what you think each means.

Radiology means is probably where they take their skin off. Neurology means the thing they do to the brain. Magnetic energy is the is where the make your face pretty.

  • Describe Shays appearance at the end of the chapter using textual evidence.

"Tall and elegant with eyes deep and soulful."

Blog Post #45-"Over the Edge"

  • In this chapter a few Uglies go to New Pretty Town to do a "trick."They make the words "THE SMOKE LIVES" with sparklers. If you had ONE chance to post a message important to you, what would it be and why?

Mine would be " If you quit now, you will think you can quit anything else in life". I say that because most of my friends complain about quiting stuff they don't like. So that's what i tell them.

Blog Post #44-"Accomplices"

  • The Uglies they met in this chapter are similar to Tally at the beginning of the book. When you compare her to these Uglies, how has Tally changed and what has made her change?

Tally has become WAY,WAY, WAY more mature. She has grown up a ton! I think having David around Tally, has made her more intelligent and older.

Blog Post #43-"Familiar Sights"

  • Do you think Tally's plan will work? David wants to save his parents, but what's driving Tally? Do you think she is crazy , or are her feelings valid?

I think that Tally and her plan will soon prevail. Because she loves David and really wants to help him find Maddy and Az. Nah, Tally isn't crazy she is just a little bit wacko. Yes, Tally should love David the way he is, until she tells her secret. David will probably freak when he hears Tally's secret about being a spy.

Blog Post #42-"Oil Plague"

  • How do David & Tally describe the Rusties? Is it accurate?

Tally and David describe them as crazy freako people. That isn't right because not all of the rusties are crazy freaks.

  • What are weaknesses of OUR society?

I think the weakness in our society is.... economics. I'm not sure about it all, but on the news it all about stocks, foreclosures, etc. I think everyone should just take a chill pill.

  • What are weaknesses of THEIR society?

Well they promise you the best life in NPT but they change your body and your brain. They manipulate you into something your not.

Blog Post #41-"Maddy and Az"

  • Find information and a picture about a time we weren't prepared. (i.e. a natural disaster or attack). Post information and cite it.

Hurricane Ike (pronounced /ˈaɪk/) was the third costliest hurricane to ever make landfall in the United States. It was the ninth named storm, fifth hurricane and third major hurricane of the 2008 Atlantic hurricane season.[1][2] It was a Cape Verde-type hurricane, as it started as a tropical disturbance near Africa at the end of August. On September 1, 2008, it became a tropical storm west of the Cape Verde islands.[3][4] By the early morning hours of September 4, Ike was a Category 4 hurricane, with maximum sustained winds of 145 mph (230 km/h) and a pressure of 935 mbar (27.61 inHg).[5] That made it the most intense Atlantic storm of 2008. Ike passed over the Turks and Caicos Islands as Category 4, with winds 135 mph (217 km/h) on September 7. Moving west along Cuba, it made 2 landfalls as a Category 4 hurricane on September 7 and a Category 1 hurricane on September 9. Ike made its final landfall over Galveston, Texas as a strong Category 2 hurricane, with Category 5 equivalent storm surge, on September 13, 2008 at 2:10 a.m. CDT. Hurricane-force winds extended 120 miles (193 km) from the center.[inconsistent]
Ike was blamed for at least 195 deaths. Of these, 74 were in
Haiti, which was already trying to recover from the impact of three storms earlier that year: Fay, Gustav, and Hanna. In the United States, 112 people were killed, and over 300 are still missing.[2][6] Due to its immense size, Ike caused devastation from the Louisiana coastline all the way to the Kenedy County, Texas region near Corpus Christi, Texas.[7] In addition, Ike caused flooding and significant damage along the Mississippi coastline and the Florida Panhandle[8] Damages from Ike in US coastal and inland areas are estimated at $24 billion (2008 USD)[2], with additional damage of $7.3 billion in Cuba (the costliest storm ever in that country), $200 million in the Bahamas, and $500 million in the Turks and Caicos, amounting to a total of at least $32 billion in damages. Ike was the third costliest Atlantic hurricane of all time, behind Hurricane Andrew of 1992 and Hurricane Katrina of 2005.[2] The hurricane also resulted in the largest evacuation of Texans in that state's history. It also became the largest search and rescue operation in U.S. history.[9]

Blog Post #40-"Ruin"

  • Describe the irony in Tally's "victory" over Dr. Cable. What was lost in the process?

Tally was just pumed Dr. Cable hadn't captured her. She also really wants to save the Smokies.

Tally lost most of her friends from the Smoke. They were captured by Dr. Cable and taken back to Special Circumstances.

Blog Post #39-"Is David Right?"

  • Is David right? Is Tally amazing? Do you think she should feel guilty? Why or why not?

No, Tally is most definietly not amazing. She betrayed all of her Smoky friends for herself to become pretty. She should feel very gulity for doing what she did.

Blog Post #38-"Run"

  • Who is the voice in the dark? Do you think it will be a friend or enemy to Tally? What do you think Tally will do?

I think the voice in the dark is David her "boyfriend". Then I think Tally is going to crawl into his arms.

Blog Post #37-"In Case of Damage"

  • Explain what self preservation means to you. Is it the most important thing? Would you lie because of it?

Self Preservation is basically staying strong in what you believe in. Yes, I really think self preservation really could be the most important thing. Well it kind of depends on the situation. If it's important I wouldn't lie. But if it wasn't that important I would maybe lie.

Blog Post #36-"The Rabbit Pen"

  • Tally had changed her mind about the Smoke and the operation, but what will she do about all that now? Whose side is she on?

Tally knows she made the wrong decision by betraying the Smokies. So now Tally will do anything possible to get away from the Special Circumstances. Now Tally has sided with the Smokies.

Blog Post #35-"Invasion"

  • Is this the climax of the book? Explain why or why you don't think so in a few sentences.

Definietly! This is when Tally finally makes her decision. She could either run away from the Specials Circumstances, or she could leave and become pretty. This was the best part for me. Because you don't know the decision she'll make.

Blog Post #34-"Burning Bridges"

  • Read the following quote David says to Tally.

"What you do, the way you think, makes you beautiful." Name one person in your personal (home) life and one in your academic life (you may leave them nameless if you wish)...what makes that person beautiful?

Probably my dog, Sophie. Because she loves me no matter what mood I'm in. Also she is very cute, which adds to her beauty. In my academic life, it would probably be "him". Because we relate so much in everything but height.

Blog Post #33-"Pretty Minds"

  • Respond to the following quote, what does it mean to you/to the story?

"Becoming pretty doesn't just change the way you look it changes the way you think."

I think when you turn pretty they don't only "mess up" your face, but your brain as well.

  • How would you want to change mentally and physically if you were pretty? (think...habits, intelligence, and physical attributes)

I would like to be TALLER, definitely. For sure I would love to be smarter than I already am. I would also probably be obsessed with hoverboarding.

Blog Post #32-"The Secret"

  • What does the following quote tell you about the city and society in general?

"But you know about genetics, don't you? Sure, I know all about genes. I knew two sisters, uglies, who looked almost the same. But parents and children? That's just weird."

I think that, well apparently most parents genes don't usually "transfer" to their children. So it seems that it's very unusual for parent's to look like their children. Because, in the real world (earth) most people look pretty darn close to their parents.

  • Predict what you think being "Pretty" is:

A rich, brat that thinks that they could easily rule the world.

Blog Post #31-"Bravery"

  • Give an example of each of these from the chapter:

Imagery: "The thought of rabbits being killed, skinned, and cooked suited her mood. Like the rest of her day, this meal tasted brutal and serious." p.243

Personification: "A feeling spread through her, a warmth that pushed away the cold wind cutting across the ridge." p.249

Simile: "Dr. Cable's pendant seemed to grow heavier and heavier, wound around her neck as tightly as the vines, brush, and roots grasping the railroad tracks." p.243

Blog Post #30-"Suspicion"

  • Do think Shay has a right to be jealous of Tally? Why or why not?

Yes, Tally stole her man,David, which Shay really liked. I would be jealous if a was a ugly girl, like Tally and Shay fighting over a ugly man.

  • Tally received a gift from David in the chapter that is special. Have you ever received something that made others jealous as this gift did? Did your gift have a speical meaning behind it as Tally's had?

Yes, I got a very "high tech" phone for birthday. Everytime I would take it out of my pocket people would be like, "let me see it", or "OH what is that called?". It gets a bit annoying though. My gift really didn't have a special meaning though, just a awesome birthday present.

Blog Post #29-"Hearthrob"

  • Why would it have been easier for Tally to activate the pendant when she got to the Smoke?

Because Shay and David keep telling her how much they trust her. Also she is getting used to the Smoke, and is "enjoying herself" there. She also likes David very much and they are really getting to love each other. So I think that Tally should of activated the pendant RIGHT when she got there.

Blog Post #28-"David"

  • If David's parents were doctors, why do you think they ran away?

"They are doctors.""Huh. But...hang on. Doctors? How old were they when they ran away?""Old enough. They weren't uglies anymore. I think it's called being a middle pretty?"

I think they were having the time of their lives, but something extreme happened. Because if i was a doctor getting payed millions to do operations they been doing forever why run away. So there had to be a paient, or something that told them about the Smoke. Or something drasctically extreme crazy happened.

Blog Post #27-"Work"

  • Find an image of a skyline like the one Tally sees. Post it. What is beautiful about it? Is there anything ugly about it?

I think this is a beautiful skyline/cloud. Because anytime I see a sunset like this it makes me feel good.

Blog Post #26-"The Model"

  • What do you think about Shay's description of a model? Shay and Tally have a skewed view of our time, but what have they got right?

"Kind of like a professional pretty. I guess when everyone else is ugly, being pretty is sort of, like, your job."

Well I guess that would be a very good descrption of a model, for a person who lives no where near our time right now. Models are basically being payed money for being skinny and can wear a dress. So Shay has a great description.

Shay and Tally think it's crazy that people starve themselves. But in our time girls usualy do it to fit in. But Tally and Shay just stay the way they are and don't want to starve themselves.

Blog Post #25-"Lies"

  • Characterization:.....David

An Ugly, self appointed leader, kind smile.

  • Find a picture of what you think the smoke looks like and post it on your blog with an explanaion of why you chose it.

Blog Post #24 -"Bug Eyes"

  • List the important events of the chapter in chronological order.
  1. Tally got caught in the fire.
  2. Rangers helped Tally from the firestorm.
  3. Rangers take Tally to where the people from the Smoke could get her.
  4. Tally goes to find Shay.
  • Respond to the following quote:
  • "...Tally was stuck out here in the wild forever. Ugly for life. Her only way home was to betray her friend."

I feel really bad for Tally because she has to make the decision of her life.

Blog Post #23-"Firestorm"

  • Give an example of each of these from the chapter:

Imagery: "Bug Eyes"

Personification: "Fingers of fire shot up from the hill."

Simile: "At first, there was a sound like a roaring wind in her dreams."

Blog Post #22-"The Side you Despise"

  • What do you think the flying machine was? Who was in it? Make a prediction.

Well I think the only possible thing for who was in it was the firebug eye things. Because that's the next step in the "directions".

Blog Post #21-"The Worst Mistake"

  • Have you ever made youself do something that you didn't want to do because you knew you had to?

Yes, when I was a child I was forced to eat my vegetables. I really hate vegetables, but I couldn't leave the table unless I ate them. So I did what my parents said.

  • Predict what you think is going to happen next?

I think that a giant robot vaccum will pick up Tally.

Blog Post #20-"Spagbol"

  • Invent a dried food you would take with you on your journey if you were Tally. What would it be?

Spagzza (spaghetti pizza)

  • How would you make it?

It would a liquid that you heat into a solid

  • Make a list of things you would miss about your home if you were forced to leave it as Tally was.

Family

School:)

Guitar

Wii

My pets

Friends

Church

Blog Post #19-"Leaving"

  • Why do you think Tally ultimately decides to figure out where Shay is?

Well Tally will now do anything to become pretty. She has been waiting 16 years of her life and doesn't want to wait longer. Also Tally really wants Shay to become pretty with her because Tally and Shay are best friends.

Blog Post #18-"Infiltrator"

  • Give a chronological list of important events that happened in the chapter.

1. Tally finally decides to talk to Dr.Cable

2. Tally tells the Special Circumstances about what she knows about Shay

3. The only way Tally can become pretty is to find Shay in the "Smoke"

4. So Tally gives in, because she really wants to become pretty

Blog Post #17-"Peris"

  • Why do you think Peris comes back? Support your answer with textual evidence.

I think Peris came to see Tally because, first he missed her and second he was probably wondering why she didn't become pretty.

"Of course I came. The moment I found out where you were I came. "

Friday, February 12, 2010

Blog Post #16-"Ugly for Life"

  • Respond to the following quote:

"Everywhere she went , eyes looked away. But it was the most visible she'd ever felt."

  • It's kind of weird she felt visible when no one was looking at her. Because she was trying be be,"invisible". But she was an ugly although she should be a pretty.

Blog Post #15- "Special Circumstances"

  • Summarize the chapter highlighting the importent events in chronological order. Predict what you think will happen next.

The doctor takes Tally to, Dr. Cable. While Tally is there she figures out she is apart of a "special circumstance". Her friend Shay runs away to be free, also Shay doesn't want to be ugly. So they bring in Tally, Shay's best friend, to give them answers, Tally does the best she can without giving away to much.

  • Dr. Cable-

Cruel pretty, sharp teeth, eyes a non-reflective gray

Blog Post #14- "Operation" Form B

  • Summarize the chapter highlighting the impostants events in chronological order. Predict what you think will happen next.

Tally is finally 16 and is excited for her operation. Tally is waiting for the hover car to take her to get her operation, in New Pretty Town. So the Pretty comes and picks her up. Tally is taken to the hospital, were she waits for hours. Eventually a doctor comes and says to come with him, she follows.

  • I think that something is very wrong with Tally. Also i hope she gets her operation done, because she has been waiting her whole life.

Blog Post #14- "Last Trick" Form A

  • Respond to the following quote, what does it mean to you?

"We don't have to look like everyone else, Tally, and act like everyone else. We've got a choice. We can grow up any way we want."

  • Basically in the real world Shay is saying, you dont have to act like the "cool" people to be "cool". You have a choice and everyone is unique in there own way.

Blog Post #13-"Fight"

  • Shay and Tally were having an argument in the library, the fight was over who got a certain book. Tally won the fight, and knocked Shay over the railing but Shay had a bungee jacket.
  • The other fight was over leaving the ruins. Tally was freaking out and wanted to leave while Shay wanted to stay and explore.

Compare

  • Both are fights about something
  • Tally ends up winning both fights

Contrast

  • One in library, one in ruins

Blog Post #12- "Waiting for David"

  • What does the following quote from the chapter tell you about the city?

"That was one thing being outside the city:It made all that nature stuff they taught in school seem a lot more useful. She remembered now how rainwater fell on the mountains and soaked into the ground..."

Well that quote to me tells me how different the city is from the ruins. It also tells me they teach "uglies" about the ruins and how to survive. Almost like they know most "uglies" will sneak out to the ruins.

Tuesday, February 9, 2010

Blog Post#11-"Rusty Ruins"

  • Write a one paragraph summary of this chapter. Tell important events in chronological order.

Tally and Shay finally make it to the Rusty Ruins. Tally is really creeped out while Shay is super interested. Tally is kinda afraid of the "ruins" because it is unknown to her. Shay then shows Tally a roller coaster made out of all iron. So Shay encourages Tally to ride with her hoverboard, so Tally is up for the challenge while she is riding there is a sudden gap in the roller coaster, leaving Tally free falling. Tally FREAKED out, but eventually got over it. Shay wanted to show Tally a friend of hers but he didn't show up.

  • Two similes found in chapter

"Every building sported jagged spurs of metal sticking from its broken walls, like bones jutting from a long-dead animal." Uglies, p. 62

"They would stick ground cars to it and go as fast as they could. Up, down, around in circles. Like hover boarding, without hovering." Uglies, p.63

Blog Post#10- "Rapids"

  • In this chapter, Tally says, "I kind of like being fooled about some things." Do you agree with Tally, or would you rather know the reality behind everything? Why?

I believe 100% with that quote Tally says. If you knew the mystery to everything what would you ever learn? Like if you knew there was no "BIG MAN" then why would you read christmas stories and listen to christmas music. Probably my whole class was disappointed when they figured out Santa wasn't real(especially Taylor Lane, he cried).

  • History of white water rafting

It is interesting to note that whitewater rafting was one of the earliest forms of transportation. It was not only used for carrying people but also for transferring goods from one place to another. However, it became quite popular as a form of leisure activity in the 1980s.
In 1811, the first recorded attempt to navigate the Snake River in Wyoming was planned by the Overland Astorians. While attempting to boat the stretch below Jackson Hole, the river was found to be too treacherous and it came to be called ?Mad River.?
The rubber river raft is believed to have been invented in the early 1840s. It was first made by Lt. John Fremont, who was then serving in the U.S army and Horace H. Day. They invented the rubber raft with the intention of surveying the Rocky Mountains and the Great Plains. Although the raft was invented in the mid-nineteenth century, it was not until the turn of the century that the first ever commercial whitewater trip was undertaken. At first, surplus military rafts were used as boats and it was only much later that inflatable rafts were used.
Private companies played a major role in augmenting the rafting business. In 1956, one of the members of the most affluent business families of America, John D. Rockefeller built a resort that introduced one of the first floating trips in the country. However, it only evoked a lukewarm response. Later, in the 1960s and 1970s, exclusive whitewater rafting companies were formed. These include the Becker-Cooke Expeditions, Hatch River Expeditions and Slickrock Adventures.
Rafting was first included in the Munich Olympic Games, 1972. Subsequently, it was included in the 1992 Barcelona Games and the 1996 Atlanta Games. In 1996, the Ocoee River in Tennessee Valley played host to the whitewater events of the Summer Olympic Games.

Blog Post #9- "Pretty Boring"

  • Describe the Rusty Ruins, what are they?

The Rusty Ruins are a old abandoned town, in which uglies lived before. Also everything is the same as it was when the people abandoned it. There is a roller coaster too, which Shay and Tally use with their hover boards.

  • Define Peer pressure.

Peer pressure, is when your peers pressure you to do something good or bad.

Well, once Taylor Lane told me to make a choking noise, when he pulled on my hoodie hood to be funny. So me being easily pressured said "Okay". Then he pulled on it so it went "uhhuhh" like I was choking and my teacher, Mrs. Valdez, get very annoyed and yelled at me. But if i were her i would do the same thing.

Blog Post #8- "Facing the Future"

  • Reflect on the quotes from this chapter, what do they mean to you?

"Making our selves feel ugly is not fun."...."This whole game is just designed to make us hate ourselves."

  • This quotes is just how America is today. We have models just trying to show how we should look. All girls nowadays hate how they look, so they just try to look like models.

"Everyone judged everyone else based on their appearance. People who were taller got better jobs...people killed each other over stuff like having different skin color"

  • To me it sounds just like discrimination like back in the 60s. Everyone judged each otheron skin color. Just like the quote, whites killed blacks. Just because of ther skin color.

"Its the only way to make people feel equal."

  • That quote is true because if everyone was "pretty" than they are all equal. No one can discriminate.

Blog Post #7- "Wipeout"

  • Think of another book, comic, movie in which they use hoverboards

I thought about "Back to The Future 2"

  • Do you think pretties come back to Uglyville?

No they like to leave there "ugly" self in the past. They would like to move foreward and forget about being "ugly". When Uglies become pretty they get basically wiped clean. All new skin, in fact all new everything. Also there face becomes exactly symetrical.

Blog Post #6 "Shay"

  • Write a full paragraph summary about this chapter

Tally has to make a brave jump off the top of Garbo Mansion, in which ends up in disater. Tally needs to escape because, she is an ugly, so she gets a "bungee jacket". But she has to pull a fire alarm to release the jacket. Therefore all of the pretties start freaking out! So Tally justs clears her mind and..... "flies". Right as she could see the details off everyone, the bungee jacket takes action and saves her life! Tally rolls all the way done a hill to the river that seperates NPT and Uglyville. While she is hiding in the brush, she sees a figure. Neither of them move finally Tally gives in. Tally though it was a security guard, but actually it was Shay a ugly like her. Soon Shay and Tally become best friends.

  • What have you learned about Shay?Is she like Tally? Make a prediction about what will happen between Tally and Shay?

I've learned Shay is really adventurous and she LOVES to hoverboard. Shay is, in many ways, like Tally. For example they are both ugly, love to hoverboard, adventurous, etc. I think Tally and Shay will become best friends later in the book. Also Shay, I think, doesn't really want to be a pretty.

Blog Post #5

  • Why do you think New Pretty Town advocates bungee jumping?

Well New Pretty Town is a "unique" place. So why wouldn't they bungee jump. Also most normal people don't bungee jump. Therefore that shows that New Pretty Town isn't normal. They're already "perfect" why not have some fun.

  • History of Bungee Jumping

Blog Post #4

  • Tally

Tally is very adventures and really doesn't care about the rules either. Tally cares all about friendship and would never ditch her friends. Tally also can not wait to be pretty so she can hang out with peris.

  • Peris

Peris is now pretty and left his best friend, Tally, back in Uglyville. Peris is also very popular in Pretty Town. Also in Tally's eyes he is BEAUTIFUL!

  • How do you feel about the friendship of Tally and Peris? Do you think they are true friends?

I think Tally and Peris are truly best friends. But when Peris left that really made a difference in there friendship. Tally is also very excited to be pretty and to be able to see Peris daily. Peris is also exstatic about seeing Tally.

Blog Post #3

  • Find and quote one oxymoron or one example of irony

"Tally smiled. The revelers were wearing masks." Uglies pg. 10. I think this ironic because, they are already pretty.

  • Why do you think Tally choose to wear a mask to a party deemed "white tie"?

Because Tally is is ugly and she is trying to get into a pretties party. She needed a disguise.

  • Find the history of masks and post it
The Cultural History of Masks - Life123: "Masks have been used for thousands and thousands of years in cultures around the world. Early masks were probably made from local materials. Harder-to-find or more precious materials would probably have been used to embellish more important masks in ancient times, as they are now.
Over the centuries, masks became associated with religion. For example, ancient Egyptians considered mummy masks to be an important part of the transition to afterlife. Today, masks made by the Iroquois people are so precious to their beliefs that the Iroquois leadership is requesting the return of face masks from museums and private collections. Traditional Iroquois want to properly care for these masks according to their ancient traditions."

Blog Post #1

  • I think beauty is "good looks"

  • I think if everyone was beautiful, life would still be....normal

I think mountains are BEAUTIFUL because, living in Texas i never get to see any.

I think this house is UGLY because it is falling apart. Also if it wasn't falling apart it would still be ugly.
